I believe this matter is of significance to your electorate, as a home to many medical students where students work and study. I am one of 20,000 medical students across Australia experiencing and witnessing the devastating impacts of placement poverty: 98% of students report financial impact due to their 2000-4000 hours of mandatory placement. 1 in 10 students report placement has impacted their access to basic food. 66% of students report financial pressures has impacted their mental health This has greater impacts on Australia's medical workforce, as placement poverty disproportionately affects students of rural, First Nations and low socioeconomic backgrounds who are more likely to return to serve their underserved communities. Australia spends billions annually to fill these workforce gaps, but fails to support the students who could provide that care. I urge you to advocate for the expansion of the Commonwealth Prac Payment, ensuring every student undertaking mandatory unpaid placement receives adequate financial support.
